Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
