Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to question certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
